For our first time charter fishermen, we feel it is important
to provide some background on the key elements
of offshore fishing in the mid-Atlantic region
including the Gulf Stream.
Water temperature is an extremely important
factor in the location of the offshore pelagic
species of fish that we fish for. The one thing
that affects our local climate and water
temperature more then anything else is the
Atlantic Gulf Stream. The Gulf Stream is a
fascinating force of nature with its own
entirely independent circle of life. The
location and the water temperature of the Gulf
Stream are of critical importance to its
resulting marine life as well as to our own
human lifestyles in the mid-Atlantic portion of
our country. |

The reason we have mild winters and warm humid summers here
in eastern North Carolina is due to the warm
water temperatures of the Gulf Stream being
brought past our coastline within these
currents. The Gulf Stream currents are
circulating in a constant clockwise motion
encircling the edges of the entire Atlantic
Ocean. In every area where this warm water
current passes near to land the climate is
affected. For example, although Great Britain is
on the same latitude as northern Canada, the
overall climate is warmer which results in rain
and fog instead of the colder snowy winter that
Canada receives. |
|
Most of the species that we fish for offshore are species
that are swimming and living within the Gulf
Stream’s current. Both predator and prey live
their entire lives in this current and they have
developed their own individual ecosystem.
Usually their location will depend upon the
water temperature they are most comfortable
living in and the location of the prey that they
will need for food to survive. Understanding
this independent microcosm and learning how to
take advantage of his knowledge is what makes a
good charter captain worth his fee.

Another contributing factor to the fishing in
and around the Gulf Stream is something called
the Sargasso Sea. The Gulf Stream is like a
river that circles the Atlantic but the center
of the Atlantic is not a part of this current.
In reality, it is actually like a giant lake
circled by a river current. The Sargasso Sea got
its name from a free floating living plant that
literally covers the center of the Atlantic
Ocean. Many fish move in and out of the Gulf
Stream current into the Sargasso Sea but due to
the distance away from land are unreachable by
charter boats. However, the Sargasso plants
themselves are often sucked into the Gulf Stream
current and provide the basis habitat for marine
life within the current. Good fishing can be
dependent on being able to locate the Sargasso.
On a typical charter it is often a period of
great anticipation when the boat trolls past an
isolated large patch of Sargasso. |

Instead of looking at your charter as simply a
fishing trip, we would like to invite you to
notice what a fascinating lifetime experience
the Gulf Stream creates. There are marine
creatures that live their entire lives without
ever leaving this body of water. There are birds
flying over the Gulf Stream that will never
touch land! There are climate influences
affecting human life every day that are
generated by this current |

unique things that you might experience on a
